Hot Tub Biofilm is a protective layer of slime that forms and houses bacteria and calcium. It forms in the hard to reach areas such as pipes, pumps and heaters. And it is virtually impenetrable by Chlorine or Bromine.
If biofilm occurs in your hot tub this can prevent the sanitisers from working effectively to kill bacteria.
If biofilm does build up in your hot tub it can lead to several issues:
- Cloudy Water
- Foaming
- Unpleasant odours
- Build-up of bacteria
When this happens, our instinct would be to add more sanitisers or different chemicals either kill the bacteria or to fix the water issue. In most cases this will not fix the issue permanently, if at all and will just cost you more in purchasing more chemicals. It will also increase your TDS (total dissolved solids).
